I know it's off topic but man dope has always been such a weird word. I associate it with the hardest of the hard (meth or heroin generally) but a lot of people use it to mean weed. The book I'm reading right now is set in the Vietnam war and they mention how one character needs premium dope in order to cope. I assumed they meant heroin since lots of soldiers did that but as I read on I'm thinking they're talking about weed. Dope just sounds like too dirty a word to mean pot though.

You're probably on to something there though. I have no evidence to back this up but it wouldn't surprise me in the very least if terms like chronic, bud, mary jane (maybe weed) were all created by stoners. On the other hand (think reefer madness) there are those who just generally have and have had a negative perception of weed throughout history. It is perhaps those who were trying to portray marijuana as being evil and "devilish" that started using the term dope! The negative connotation you have with the word dope would then be accurate. Nowadays people dont use it in such a negative way, but the roots of the term probably were pretty negative.

Yea that's true, the reason I don't like dope is probably because they used it a lot in my anti-drug education (lol) and it just seems like something my mom would call it.

To me it's always pot, weed, nug, bud, or dank.

I agree to me 'dope' has always been a term for heroin. always catches me off guard when someone calls pot 'dope'
