i know this subject hasent been touched in awhile, but felt compled to voice my opinion/experiences.
I have two friends that have smoked while pregnant. one ten yrs. ago and one had a baby in Nov.
My first friends baby hasent been right since birth..ya know just looked a little different in the eyes..now he is kinda a freak kid...cant hardly understand a word he says and looks and acts half mentally retarded.
nothing agianst the kid i love him to death. but im glad hes not mine.
As for my other friends baby...nothing looks wrong now...but i guess i will let you know in 10 yrs.
The thing is every one is different...and where one person may luck out the next girl may not. What you have to ask yourself is "am i willing to take that chance?"
Tell your friend good luck!!

I just hate it when people talk out of there asses without having no personal experience or data to back it up. Most of the time they think up something in their head that sounds logical to them then they post it as if it was fact.
WVgurl, I don't know if you're still around but this article should help you out a bit.

Teratogen-is an environmental agent such as a drug, chemical, virus, or other factor that produces a birth defect.
Mother's use of many drugs illegal and legal pose risks to the unborn child. Even OTC remedies can have suprising effects on the unborn fetus.
Consider, for instance, the use of marijuana. Certainly one of the most commonly used illegal drugs-millions of people in the United States have admitted to trying it-marijuana used during pregnancy can restrict the oxygen that reaches the fetus. Its use can lead to infants who are irritable, nervous, and easily disturbed. Children exposed to marijuana prenatally show learning and memory deficits at the age of ten (Feng, 1993; Cornelius et al., 1999; Richardson et al., 2002).
The babies Central Nervous system is most at risk from weeks 2-6.
The babies Heart is most at risk from weeks 2 1/2-6 1/2.
The babies arms are most at risk from weeks 4 1/2-8.
The babies eyes are most at risk from weeks 4 1/2-8 1/2.
The babies legs are most at risk from weeks 4 1/2-8.
The babies teeth are most at risk from weeks 6 3/4-12.
The babies palate are most at risk from weeks 6 1/2-13.
The babies external genitalia are at most risk from weeks 7-14.
The babies ears are at most risk from weeks 4 1/2-13.
All of these are when the baby is at the most risk, allthough for many of these the unborn child is at risk through all three trimesters (Feldman, 2006).
So should a mother smoke during pregnancy, well at least according to the people who wrote textbooks and scientific journals on the subject, no.
Also fathers to be should avoid smoking in the same building as the mother. The secondhand smoke will get into the mother and therefor affecting the child.
The greater the level of a father's smoking the lower the birthwieght of his children (Hyssaela, Rautava, & Helenius, 1995; Tomblin, Hammer, & Zhang, 1998).
