I believe smoke detectors have a temperature threshold they have to cross before they go off, so smoke from a large fire would set it off, but smoke from cigarettes, incense, stovetops, etc. will not. Which is why you can smoke weed around a smoke detector. If it weren't for that, something as simple as steam from a shower could set it off (because it'd block the sensors in the same way smoke does.)

I remember coming home one night with a couple of friends reallllly messed up and I sparked a joint really close to my smoke detector. Granted I was pretty close to it, but it sure as hell went off.

I don't have a smoke detector in my room, which is the only place I smoke in my house. There is one sitting right outside the door to my room (I am looking straight at it) but that's just too far for a little weed smoke to ever go.
