Height of lights ...

Hi all
I am new here, and I would like to ask a question if anyone has advice for me. I haven't browsed the other threads so forgive me if this has been asked 1,000 or more.
I have germinated seeds, and they are planted. Now the plants are just sprouted. So about 1 1/2" high.
I am using a 1,000 bulb. How hight should this light be set over the seedlings. I don't want to "burn" them. Thanks allot for your input.

yeah read that guide, should explain everything you need to know. basically i think they need to be far enough away that it doesn't feel uncomfortably hot on your hand if you put your hand right above the plants. HID type lighting usually tend produce a lot of heat and need to be moved pretty far from the plants, while fluorescent lighting is usually much cooler and can be safely placed much closer to the plants, even almost touching in some cases, but usually like 2-4 inches is good with floro's.

What kind of 1,000 bulb? There is a world of difference between CFL - where it can be a few inches and metal halide or HPS - which need much much greater distances. You want to be as close as allowed to prevent stretching.

There's only two types of bulbs that get to a 1,000 watt's... HPS and MH, I think the highest I've seen a CFL get up to is 250 watt's

Didnt know CFLs didnt go that high. Although I dont see why someone couldnt put a bunch of short bulbs lengthwise down a fixture, giving more light than horizontal tubes

HID (High Intensity Discharge)- either MH or HPS is the same height distances
There's no 1000 watt cfl...

do you realize how wattage-efficient CFL's are? that'd be like as bright as the sun man.

Well mine has 200watt total I imagine if they took the same 2x8 footprint as my current light, and used like 16 2" bulbs widthwise instead of 4 8" bulbs lengthwise, 1,000 watts could probably be achieved...

Dont be a smartass dude
when I talk about my light I say its a 200W CFL. I dont say "I hang my 2 foot by 8 foot light fixture which houses 4 individual T5 54W CFL bulbs lengthwise exactly 3 inches above the plants"
I say I hang my 200w CFL above my plants

yeah but that's just incorrect... you have 200 watts OF CFL's, not 200 watt CFL's.. just by those small differences completely changes what it means.
