Teaching yourself guitar...

Has anyone here taught themselves to play the guitar?

If you have, how did you do it (what books did you use, websites or whatever you did)

I've always wanted to learn but cant afford lessons, so i was wondering the easiest way to teach myself. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Edit: Any advice that doesnt cost me any money would be appreciated even more

my one friend picked up "guitar playing for dummies", he said it taught him a lot. my other friend just tooled around on it for a few years and hes pretty good.

Get a guitar, go to google and type "a song you want to play" tabs or "a song you want to play" chords. You'll learn how to read tabs (in about 2 minutes) and just start playing. After you get the hang of it, get stoned, and play with someone who's a lot better at playing the guitar than you. You'll learn a lot by playing with others.

No Books, No Teaching, No Learning, Just Heart, the same as with any instrument. If you play around with it and figure out what sounds like what, you'll be playing your own favourite music in no time.

There's a great book that I bought a long time ago called "The Incredible Chord Finder". It's awesome for learning your basic and more complex chords.

I've been playing guitar for 18 years and except for about 6 months of lessons, I'm all self taught. Use the Internet to its full extent. It's a great resource for anything you want to know that's theory related.

Do what I do. Don't kill yourself with theory because some of the best guitarists know very little theory. Playing from the heart/soul/bowels is the best way I know how to play. But above all, practice as much as you can...it's the only way you'll improve (duh).

I have been playing on and off for a couple years, never really got the hang of it. This book was a waste of money. It was interesting to read and learn about pieces of guitar and stuff, but a lesson book would be the way to go. The teach yourself guitar books are nice, especially the ones with videos. Go to a local music store and ask the cashier, or if theres a whole seperate guitar section(like my fav music store) than ask him.

I'm not sure. I can play most guitar riffs if I have the guitar tab in front of me and a copy of the song to listen to. I've heard Freebird a few times, but I've never tried playing it.

I can play the intro to Sweet Home Alabama if that helps?

They came to concert last year and it was fucking swell. But the best part is that they are coming again in 3 weeks. Cant wait.

Haha, i can play all of free-bird apart from that stupid solo.
