First grow lots of Q's.
I am preparing for my first grow, since getting everything I need to grow is a work in progress at the moment I am trying to get my lighting done. What I want to know is if one of these lights would be good to use for 1-2plants. I can either get an Sylvania Dulux S 800 Lumens Compact Fluorrcent or an Sylvania Dulux S 400 Lumens Compact Fluorrcent. I also have heard that you need something different to plug these in. If someone could explain what I need to operate these blubs that would be great. I could also use some help on seeds, all the seeds I've looked at from the local dealers are black or white on the outside, and break when I barely touch them.

Please forgive anything that does not make sense. I wonder what is effecting my mind?

My only advice is to read up on what is recommended for good growing.

I don't know anything about lighting, but I've read that High Pressure Sodium lights are the ideal grow light.
As far as the seeds go, if they're crumbling apart then I'd say they're no good. Good healthy seeds should be firm, and dark in color.

Yeah I've decided that I am going to save up money so I can order some seeds online and get better lights. I'll probly be ordering from THCSeeds or from Amsterdammarijuanaseeds. It seems like a better idea to get spend the extra on things like a better light and seeds than don't and get a bad final product.

I would advise starting right now. Get a good 400w Metal Hallide ballast and bulb, and a good hydroponic system (I have used the Megagarden by Hydrofarm for literally years - about 5 years - with only excellent results).do_you_accept_change? wrote:Yeah I've decided that I am going to save up money so I can order some seeds online and get better lights. Dont waste money on those Amsterdam seeds - Ive seen them sold for about 300$US for a half-dozen. Instead start to grow the seeds you have. You will be amazed at how great a decent seed can turn out when grown with proper conditions. Ive had seeds from bags of brown weed, nothing special, cultivated them and grown them under a 400 watt MH for growth stage, a 430w SunAgro High Pressure Sodium light in same ballast (conversion bulb) during budding phase, and had EXCELLENT results - high grade sinsi bud which blew my mind. This whole time you should be rooting seeds and looking for Indo plants rather than standard simillia plants, and you can eventually have a mother plant or two for cloning forever of your best weed, meantime you are GROWING weed. Dont waste time and money waiting for seeds from Amsterdam. Use what you have now, and spend the time and money on a good indoor bulb and ballast and ebb and flow system.
I promise you will be happy,
Goo

I don't know anything about hydroponic growing. The MegaGarden thing is $174.95 and the 400W Metal Halide is $93.08 each. And the seeds I can easily get have a black skin around them like how a peanut has when you crack open the shell but it falls off really easily and its white when its off. Unless these seeds are ok to use, I'll have to order online since dealers aren't eager to sell me some seeds since they assume I want there bussiness. The THCSeeds doesn't look like a bad idea, its based in Canada but it's expensive for there seeds like $40+ for 16.
Edit:what is an ebb?

You can't go through the entire growing process using only fluros.
Metal Halide(MH) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) are the most common HID grow lights. MH bulbs emit a blue-white spectrum, which is more conductive for vegetative growth or starting seeds and clones. HPS bulbs are red-orange in the spectrum, which is ideal for the fruiting and flowering stage of a plant's development.
But I use high pressure sodium from start to finish and get EXCELLENT results. For 1-2 plants you could use a 400 watt bulb.
And these light need what is called a ballast(power source) and reflector (bulb housing) to function them. They can't be plugged directly into a normal wall plug. Make sure you get the proper voltage. Most US and canadian households are for 120 volts. If you live in another country it may be different.
I use a horizontal reflector similar to this one

but one of my friends does the vertical one like this

Vertical hoods tend to throw the light over a greater area (or ''all over the place''). It is important to realize that each kind of bulb puts out a certain number of lumens, and that the greater the area that the light is dispersed over, the lower the number of lumens per square foot will be. So if you're growing plants that need a lot of light, don't use a vertical hood unless you are in a large area with several fixtures.
Here is an example of a kit with a ballast

Alright, things are finally comming togethor. I have come into posession of a shed and also a place to keep it. I'm going to be putting the shed togethor whenever I get time and measuring dimensions. Also now I have the money for a 1000w HPS light but I just don't have shipping costs. This is the light I am going to be ordering: (Thanks Higher for pointing out the site in another thread) http://www.insidesun.com/index.php?acti ... revstart=0
I've also read much more on growing at overgrow/these forums. A question I do have is would rabbit pellets be a good fertilizer, and how should they be given to the plant? I only ask because my Aunt runs some 4H thing with them and has lots of rabbits.

Ahh good to hear you have decided to go with a better little. Shed sounds like a good idea too.
Yeah shipping costs for lighting kits are expensive. It goes by weight and the ballast weighs a ton. Mine must weigh 15 or 20 pounds
The best place to go look up growing info is http://www.hempcultivation.com/420/index.php
They're way better than overgrow I think
