It all depends on how you want to grow the stuff! If you want it to be simple then a soil grow is a good idea. Soil allows you a 'buffer' for any nutrient errors. Hydro can be unforgiving but if its done well can be far superior to plain soil. A basic setup would be...

Growroom. You can build your own for less than £70. Mylar sheet is around £2.50 per metre.

Lamp, Id say a min of 400 Watts HPS for a decent yield. For a lamp this size you want a room thats 3ft sq. Try and keep to 50W per sq ft. (3x3=9. 400/9 = 44.444r W/sqft More light is better but means more heat.Cost is around £150 but you can have a look on E-Bay for one.

Pots around £2.50 for a 5 gallon one.

Extractor fan. 4" is ok but youll have trouble if you want to add a carbon filter. The trouble with a 4" fan is that its not powerful enough to pull the air through the filter. Get a 5" fan for £85

Ducting for fan is around £1 per metre.

Soil is around £3 per 50l bag.
Vermiculite and Perlite are around £5 per bag. You want a 25% mix with the soil for drainage.

Nutes. Ive found that Canna Terra Vega/Flores are pretty damn good. Usually around £11 for both.

Oscillating fans are around £15 for a 12" one.

I think you mean what are the strongest strains? If so youd not go far wrong with Dutch Passions Blueberry. Can be a bugger to grow but if youre in soil you should be ok. If its your first grow go with cheaper genetics. They may not be as good but if you fuck it up then you havent wasted a load of money on seeds.
