Favourite guitarist?
Not necessarily the most talented, but the person you dig the most. For me its Jimi Hendrix, I just love his style so much. He took what sounds you can get out of a guitar to new limits, which imo haven't been reached since. If you're into rock music and you haven't seen his performance at Woodstock you're missing out. Such a shame he wasn't around long, if only he went to sleep on his stomach that day he died (he choked on his vomit). I'm not taking the piss, such a small factor took away one of the best musicians who has ever lived. Maybe turn this into a poll if we get similar choices

Being a guitar player myself, I have many influences:
Steve Vai- Yes, he falls into the 'shredder' catagory along with Satriani and Yngwie...but he has so much more feeling than most. I'm not overly thrilled with Vai's rhythm playing, but his leads and phrasings are just so beautiful.
Al DiMeola- I only own a 'best of' CD of his, but everything on it just flows through you. Some of the music is somewhat dated (one song sounds like a theme from a 70's detective show) but his techniques are amazing.
David Gilmour- Pink Floyd as a group are top notch...Floyd's been a favorite of mine since I was 7 years old (grew up with a much older brother). Gilmour's playing has actually made me weep, that's how much his playing means to me. It's a shame that I was born in the wrong time and I'll never have a chance to see him live.
Chuck Schuldiner- Leader of the now defunct Floridian death metal band called "Death". His songwriting ability puts many of today's musicians to shame. His playing is fast, brutal, melodic, and very, very tight. Sadly, Chuck died a few years ago from a cancerous tumor that was on his brain stem.

Jimmy Page is also wicked. He's definetley in my top 5, but the order of my top 5 changes all the time (apart from Jimi). He'd probably be number 2 or 3 for me especially after recently watching a live version of Stairway to heaven I downloaded, which blew my mind.Disraeli Gears wrote:Its a cliche, but id have to say Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, he was a guitar machine, he could play anything and make it sound fucking brilliant.

Al Dimeola, Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin
These 3 are the best, simple.
download mediterranean sundance. 11 minute 28 of stringplucking madness, too fast to follow for real, but by the sound of the many strings hit in a second, you can tell that a limit has been reached. btw the last 2 minutes is the applauds from the people listening, I rest my case.

Kurt Cobain purely for his attitude and inspirational side. on talent i could name many such as metallica's kirk hammet or maiden's dave murray and janick gers, but cobain was the most influential guitarist of his genre, and i am into grunge music A LOT.
he also proved to the world that it is possible to play a full show half an hour after nearly dying due to a drug overdose!
